Poetry unplugged at the Franschhoek Literary Festival

Franschhoek Literary Festival

If you enjoy the rhythm of words, then you will enjoy this year’s poetry at the 10th annual Franschhoek Literary Festival, to be held over three days in May.

Notes from the Dementia WardBearingsFlame in the SnowBare and Breaking

Poets participating in all of the poetry events will read from their work, but a number of purely performance events are also on offer:

Friday, 13 May

Listen to high school learners participate in the Poetry for Life competition finals, hosted by multiple-award winning poet Finuala Dowling, and judged by poet and literary agent Isobel Dixon, poet and sociocultural linguist of the University of the Western Cape Quentin Williams, poet, translator, critic, and occasional writer of fiction Leon de Kock, and Poetry for Life coordinator, Celia van Druten.

Later on that same evening some of the festival poets will be reading from their work at Essence Restaurant, where the audience can enjoy poetry while they enjoy a glass of wine or a meal, hosted by Karin Schimke. Entry is free.

Saturday, 14 May

Listen to performance poets Primrose Mrwebi, Blaq Pearl, Katleho Shoro and Quentin Williams perform at the poetry programme venue in the Protea Hotel.

Sunday, 14 May

Three up-and-coming poets will also share their work in the event Young Voices from Around the World, with South Africa’s Katleho Shoro, Jumoke Verissimo from Nigeria and Safia Elhillo (Sudan/USA).
