Franschhoek Literary Festival

FLF in the News – Part Two

The FLF made quite a splash in the Sunday Times at the weekend. Columnist Andrew Donaldson’s weather eye beheld a favourable sight:

Hoeked on Books

The American writer Richard Ford, leading light in the “Dirty Realism” movement of the ’80s, tops an impressive drawcard for this year’s Franschhoek Literary Festival.

The novelist and short-story writer is perhaps not that well known here, an indictment perhaps of our lingering cultural ties with the UK, but he’s a Pulitzer Prize winner and his novels, Independence Day, The Sportswriter and The Lay of the Land deserve a wider local audience.

And so, perhaps, does the festival, which, since its successful debut last year, has quietly muscled itself onto the South African literary calendar.

Meanwhile, we’re pleased to announce the official opening of the new Exclusive Books children’s container library, serving the communities of Groendal, Mooiwater and Tshotshombeni around Franschhoek in the Western Cape, this coming Friday. The guest of honour is Gcina Mhlope, one of South Africa’s favourite story tellers and children’s author.

The library represents the first fruits of our community library initiative.
